Let it Snow!

We have continued to have fun in the Arctic this week in Class 1.
We read a story called 'Miki' by Stephen Mackey about a little Inuit girl and we also found out some information about the Inuit people on the computer.

The children have had further opportunities to make snow, observe polar bears and walruses near the research station, build igloos and help the little Inuit girl to find her lost toys.

We are also enjoying having gymnastics with Jess and in maths have started to learn our number bonds to 10 using numicon to help us.

Many thanks for all the milk cartons - please keep bringing them in - we have about 125 and need about double this amout!

Enjoy our pictures below!
Measuring the right amounts!

Mix it up!

Sticky fingers!

In it goes!

This snow appears as if by magic when water is added!

Watch carefully!

Just the right amount!

Fascinating!

Let's play!
Don't waste any!

Great team work - a sense of achievement!

Walrus Bay Research Station

Arctic weather has been the order of the day in Class 1 at the beginning of the week.
Children recorded their findings in the Walrus Bay Research Station and observed polar bears and walruses in the wild.
Some children (and Mrs MacMorrin) had fun making real snow for the arctic animals! We made snow in two different ways - both were successful and the animals were far happier with the snow!
Some children (and Miss Rayner) helped the Inuit girl find her toys that she had lost around the school by reading clues. She was happily reunited with them all!
Some children made an igloo / shelter outside using large construction! They worked very hard with Mrs Daws to support.
The children were fascinated to see how the mud kitchen had frozen up and enjoyed cracking the ice.

It's amazing how many arctic animals you can make from paper plates - we've made three already! Great job children!

Is baking soda and hair conditioner really going to make snow?

The animals are a lot happier now!

Polar bear trek!

What shall we study first?

Working in very cold conditions, perseverance and hard work meant success!

Off to find the Inuit's toys!

Ice stopped cooking in the mud kitchen!

Arctic Expeditions!

What an exciting start to the week!
We went on an expedition to the Arctic to find the Lost Polar Bear! First we dressed up warmly, then we had to read and follow clues left by different animals, including a husky dog, a seal, Paddington Bear, a hare an a snowman! We found the Polar Bear, he was in a tent, but the Arctic wind was so strong he was buried in some snow!
We then enjoyed pancakes with maple syrup and hot chocolate to warm us up.
We also enjoyed creating our own unique Snowmen from different media.
Finally we looked at pattern and sequencing and created some repeating pattern snowmen both inside and outside!
